Medicine desk

Which medicine is being offered?

Ask for the name in full. A broad treatment label is too thin a starting point for comparing care.

Ask for the ingredient and the product

A brand is the name on a product. The generic name identifies the medicine’s ingredient. Write down both names and the form: tablet or injection.

Semaglutide

Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) has FDA-approved products.

Those brand names cover both tablets and injections, so the form matters.

Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) also has FDA-approved injection products.

Generic does not mean custom-made

Generic medicine

A generic medicine has approval as a copy of a branded medicine. A compounded medicine is prepared for a patient’s individual need; the resulting medicine is not FDA-approved.

At the dated check below, no generic semaglutide or tirzepatide had US approval allowing it to be sold.

In FDA records, “tentative approval” means a medicine meets the agency’s standards but cannot yet be sold. It is not permission to sell it.

As of September 26, 2026.

FDA: approval records

Popular names are not an approval list

BPC-157, ipamorelin and retatrutide

The FDA records checked had no US approval entry for BPC-157, ipamorelin and retatrutide.

These names had no approved US product. Whether a pharmacy may make one to order is a separate legal check.

Ask the prescriber and pharmacy: “Can this exact ingredient legally be used in a medicine made for me?”
